The Team
-
Dr. Josh Bowdridge
Dr. Bowdridge is a general internist at TOH with a special interest in clinical integration of POCUS and POCUS education. He grew up in Nova Scotia and completed his undergraduate degree in neurosciences at Dalhousie prior to moving to Ottawa for medical school. He subsequently completed both medical school, residency, and his general internal medicine fellowship at the University of Ottawa. Dr Bowdridge was the first GIM fellow to piece together a 6-month UOttawa GIM POCUS fellowship during the 2022-2023 academic year, which we hope to use as a framework for the creation of a formal GIM POCUS fellowship. He also helped co-create a core internal medicine POCUS curriculum, as well as teaching materials for the GIM fellowship POCUS curriculum.
-
Dr. Jessica Evans
Dr. Evans obtained her medical degree at McGill University in Montreal. She subsequently completed her Internal Medicine followed by General Internal Medicine subspecialty training at the University of Ottawa. During her fifth year of residency, she pursued additional training in echocardiography and heart failure management. Dr. Evans also holds a master’s degree in epidemiology and previously completed the Public Health Agency of Canada’s development program for epidemiologists while leading the chronic respiratory disease surveillance portfolio. Her main areas of research relate to the optimization of heart failure disease management programs and the incorporation of POCUS in GIM training and clinical practice.
-
Dr. Mathilde Gaudreau-Simard
Dr Gaudreau-Simard completed medical school and core internal medicine residency at McGill University before coming to Ottawa for GIM fellowship. During her last year of GIM training, she completed a 6-month Critical Care Ultrasound (CCUS) fellowship at Western University. She most recently completed a Masters in Health Admnistration at IHPME (UofT). She is the co-founder of the Ottawa GIM POCUS curriculum and POCUS elective (with Dr Kilabuk). Her quality improvement and research work focuses on the clinical integration of POCUS and how POCUS can improve resource utilisation and patient care.
-
Dr. Kordan Harvey
Dr Harvey completed medical school in Dublin, Ireland and Internal Medicine residency and GIM Fellowship in Ottawa. He holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Medicine & Pathobiology from the University of Toronto. He completed dedicated POCUS training during his residency and has an interest in POCUS education and research. The main focus of his research will be into the feasibility and implementation of POCUS in the GIM outpatient setting. He will also be closely involved in the administration of the GIM POCUS curriculum and elective rotation.
-
Dr. Abid Ismail
Dr. Ismail is a General Internal Medicine physician at TOH. He completed medical school at McMaster University followed by residency and fellowship at the University of Ottawa. He completed additional echocardiography training during his GIM fellowship. He is interested in the application of POCUS to enhance the physical examination and participates in the delivery of the GIM POCUS curriculum and supervises the GIM POCUS elective.

Dr. Elaine Kilabuk
Dr. Kilabuk is a General Internal Medicine physician who works at The Ottawa Hospital and Qikiqtani Hospital in Iqaluit, Nunavut. She completed her medical training at McGill University, followed by her residency and fellowship training at The University of Ottawa. She completed dedicated echocardiography training, self-directed POCUS training with ED staff and POCUS research electives.
She introduced a POCUS curriculum within the GIM fellowship program, co-led the initiation of POCUS electives to GIM fellows and incorporated archiving access to the Division of GIM/Department of Medicine.
She is interested in advancing safe POCUS use clinically for learners and enjoys training future POCUS experts.

Sydney Ruller
Sydney integrated the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Research Assistant with OHRI in May 2022. She completed a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She brings a wealth of expertise in research methods, most specifically in qualitative and mixed methods research, but also in quantitative methods. Sydney has become an integral part of the POCUS research team. She ensures the oversight of all POCUS projects and offers methodological support to trainees. She is also leading an implementation science study to identify barriers and facilitators to POCUS uptake in the division.
